I remember reading about that on Wikipedia several months ago. As I read it, I imagined what sort of animal could possibly make such a noise, and the only thing I could think of was a cephalopod turning over, releasing a gas bubble. As I continued reading, it stated that this is exactly what scientists assume. (Go me, I think like a scientist! ) However, no known cephalopod is large enough to produce that massive bubble. Fans of the Cthulhu say it's Cthulhu. Since the noises seem to have ceased, it's likely that this gigantic creature died, probably due to its inability to support its large size. I suppose this is more likely volcanic activity. Like I said...I read this on Wikipedia, so...

It seems that a group of Beaked whales that beached them selves 4 hours after military exercises in australia. When the autopsy was done it was found that they had internal injuries that closly resemble the bends. a condition found in divers that stay down to long then surface to quickly without decompression. Scientists found multiple gas bubble lesions in the blood vessels and tissues. This information was compared to beach strandings in england and found
